Well I (we really) finally get the cave looking something like and its dried out really well.

My 9 year (nearly 10 as he reminds me) old grandson has worked like a Trojan to help me so I set out to get a lathe set up for him this week being school hols an all.

Theses are the first two that he done in the new shed today with a little guidance from Grandad. Some of you have seen his previous efforts and he wanted to ensure they are all as good.

Epsilon - in ocean deep blue acrylic.

Both have had tubes painted and reverse painted blank along with a dab of paint mixed in the epoxy as well.

Excellent bit of turning, can't wait until my granddaughter is ready to hold a chisel. At the minute she'd probably stab me with it. :thinks:

He used a free hand a couple of times but prefers to use the metal lathe. I set him up with a carbide tipped fitting on the quick release post.

He has found his own way of tapering them, he has the lathe on auto feed and turns in the cross slide a very little bite a time and re-starts in the same place so its tapered.

He did have quite a few disasters in the learning curve. this is the result of two years "on and off" training.

I helped him with the finish as he was struggling to put the pressure on to sand out the fine lines with W&D and MM.

He doesn't use superglue only epoxy as he gets in too much mess and tries to stick all his fingers together.

He has done a good 90% of all the pens today. Just needed guidance of what types of pens and what bushes and how to make sure he has them the right way around..(digital calipers measurements.)

Thank you very much Peter, trust me I can see you now.

Now he is getting better he wants to start selling them..

I have said I will give him all my slimlines (about 30 ish kits) and whatever he makes can have to re-invest of do what he wants. But once they have gone then they are gone. he will have to buy his own. Meanie aren't I..

It is Woody, can't remember when it was we brought it off you now.. He has used it quite a few times but struggles to hold them steady. I end up finishing them off. With metal lathe he can do it all. He keeps having a go with free hand. He will get it eventually.

An excellent couple of pens well done to the young lad. Keep on encouraging him you never know what he will be capable of.
