This is my second Long Boy kit, this time in chrome. The blank is a Rhino called Blue Orca. While I like this blank more than the first Long Boy I made, I'm still a little disappointed. I like the shade of blue, but was expecting more and/or dramatic figure.

I've turned several Rhino blanks, and really like them. They do take longer to turn, because they seem to be a little harder. I know I have to sharpen my chisel usually a couple of times during turning them. But another reason is their size. They're advertised as being 7/8" x 7/8", which is nice in the case of bigger pens (like the ones that use 12.5mm tubes). The Blue Orca blank measured at 7/8" x 1", so I decided to trim it to 3/4" square. It was easy on my bandsaw with the fence. It definitely made a difference in turning time.

Nice pen bit long like the idea of trimming the uneven blank beforehand also shaving the shoulders is a wonderful thing for some plastics. You did not reply to my pm yet.

Certainly shows the kit off nicely. Is the blank one of those that really comes to life in sunlight?

Peter.

I trim the corners of all acrylic blanks before I turn them. Makes roughing them round much easier.
