High gripper

I tend to make my pens with a smooth barrel, in other words having no step between the section/cap threads and the rest of the pen. It is a personal preference I have for holding the pen further up the barrel and sometimes the step present on many pens is a little bit in the way. This quirk of mine is thanks to my childhood art teacher who was a “high gripper” and who also had the most beautiful handwriting I’ve ever seen. I assumed that if I mimicked his grip then my writing would also develop like his. Suffice to say it didn’t...

One of the things about having no step is it naturally tends to result in slimmer pens as they’re generally straight or even tapered towards the end.

So I wanted to make a pen with no step but also with a bit of girth around the belly. The result is this. It tapers outwards immediately from the threads towards the centre and then back inwards towards the end. The section is tapered, rather than pinched, to follow the lines of the pen.

The final picture shows two versions, one with square ends and one with round ends.

Cheers
Ash

There has been a lot of thought gone into that, and it shows.... Two lovely shaped pens, my preferred style is the flat end and the chosen material is just stunning. They look so classical:drool::drool:

Ash these two are just stunning the finish also is second to none well done. I really like the material could you please advise on your chosen blank is it coffee and cream ??

Did you make, carve your cap detail

Ps Nearly finished my pen I just have to turn the cap and thread it then on to polishing it.

Thanks James.

The material is a tortoiseshell cellulose acetate. I’ve had it a while and think I got it from turners workshop (but I may be wrong - I’ve acquired quite a lot of bits over time).
The other one is Omas swirl.

I am looking forward to seeing your first pen!

Oh and no I didn’t carve the cap coin. It’s cast from sterling silver (though I did design it).

@Ash I'm just waiting for some threaded bar to make a draw bar for collet chuck for finishing and polishing the pen I'm quite excited.
