Hi all some of you may have seen these pens I make this particular one is a Rhodium Statesman fountain pen the blanks are what I made for the pen.
Each blank was made separately starting with painting (air-brushing) the brass tube with a water base acrylic paint that was heated up to dry and harden the paint 3 coats in total of black paint.

A resin mandrel was made to hold the blank while hand tying the real Grizzly feathers one by one on to blank with the tying thread not holding the feathers on the blank but off to the ends (no glue and no thread on the blank itself only at each end to hold them).

30 feathers where used in total with a small amount of tinsel at one end (cap end) and gold tinsel on the lower blank.
A wooden mould was made to hold the blanks and coated with clear window mastic.

The clear PR resin was pressurized to remove are bubbles and the slowly poured into the moulds.

It took around 4 hours to make it the final pen I recently sold this pen for £170.00.

Comments and criticisms welcomed guys

Wow! The result was definitely worth the effort. Didn't think Grizzlies had feathers, though? The thought of a flying Grizzly bear is a bit terrifying ...

Hi Alex only buy the feathers from a fishing tackle shop as they are dry and free from oils at first only use feathers that lay quite flat big bulky feathers will hold air, the feathers are grizzly hackles from the cape.. That’s what is said on the packet LOL

This is the same pen done with a mixture of other feathers including Amherst pheasant notice the upper barrel has the Amherst pheasant feathers and the lower section has the grizzly hackles as laid out next to the pen.

Alex the mould was made from old scrap ply wood sealed with silicone

Hi David when you mix the hardener (catalyst) with in the resin whether its stirred slowly or fast this will cause a lot of air bubbles my method is to prepare the blank then say a 100ml of resin has to be made for that one blank then around 10ml of hardener is added to resin stirring quite vigorously to disperse all the hardener with the resin… now you have a head on your resin mix this now got to be degassed, either by vibrating to bring the air to the top and then disperse the air but this is going to take time and the resin might start to gel so what we do is to put the resin under pressure or use a vacuum now the way this is done is with this devise,

The resin mix goes in to the pot this is then clamped down and pressure is added via a compressor with the gauge set to around about 40 to 60 psi, now if a vacuum is used then we would draw the air from the chamber via a vacuum pump both methods remove the air bubbles from the resin then it can be poured into the mould VERY SLOWLY this is the method I use some people will add the mould to the chamber and then pressurize or vacuum or both.

Great fun this casting lark David

Having watched the dvd showing how this pen was made I can only marvel, yet again, at the skill and patience needed to make it. I am in awe of such talent.

The Amherst pheasant is a beaut Merv, any pen maker would be proud of this.
