The competition for May has been decided and will be A pen or pencil designed for an arthritis sufferer. The competition will officially start on the 1st. of March 2016 and end on 31st. March 2016 which means I must have your photos before midnight on the 31st. March 2016. If I get them even 1 minute into April 1st. 2016 the joke will be on you as your entry will not be included in the competition.

For newbies the usual rule is that you must have made 25 posts by the time you enter the competition, it is easily achievable, just ask a few questions and you will be up there before you know it, get on with the competition in the mean time.

You must have made 25 posts by the time you enter the competition.
You may enter 1 pen or pencil into the competition and it must be your own work.
Your photographs must be taken on a clean piece of white plain paper which does not have a texture or creases, photocopy paper is ideal.
You must not use any props in the photographs.
Your photographs must show the pen in a horizontal position as shown below.
Your images must be 800 pixels wide.
I must have your final photographs before midnight on the 31st. March 2016

Example photographs for orientation have been added.

If you PM me your images to enter the competition and later make a better pen you can PM me the photos of the new pen and I will discard the original images, that way you can be sure that you are in the competition with your first pen and if you have time to make another which you think is better you can use that one as long as I have it before the deadline.

Make sure that you keep a hi res photograph of your entry as the winner will also receive an Awards Certificate with an image of your pen. The Awards certificate is A4 and can be printed out, if you wish to use it on your craft stall, by the likes of snapmad.com or photobox.co.uk, snapmad.com would be the cheaper option if you spend 2.99 as the postage will be free, photo box will charge a minimum of 2.99 postage.

I will tweak colour, density and white balance of your images, if you request it, when you PM them to me.

If there are only 9 entries or less then there will only be 1 placing awarded as 1st. Place. If there are between 10 and 14 entries then a 2nd. place will be awarded. If there are 15 or more entries then a 3rd. place will be awarded.

This competition will be sponsored by daveygee, who, if you don't know, is a member.

Dave has offered
A Voucher for 50.00 for 1st. Place
A Voucher for 30.00 for 2nd. Place
A Voucher for 20.00 for 3rd. Place

These vouchers can be redeemed with daveygee and you can see they type of kits, blanks etc that Dave sells by looking at his eBay shop which is pitbull01uk (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Penkitz-and-Bitz/_i.html?rt=nc&_ipg=192)

If you win one of the places available, do not order from his site or you will have to pay for whatever you order, instead have a look at his site and make a note of the things you want to redeem your voucher value for and PM Dave with your list.

If I have missed something out please let me know and I will add it.

Well at least you have a couple of weeks extra time, enough for a dozen or so pens, you could even make them segmented if you really wanted or closed end, lots of ideas.

I have been waiting for others to make a noise and say their child, grandchild, baby brother/sister, niece nephew etc would be able to join in, if I remember correctly there were only 4 signed up and two were yours.

Leave it with me and I will see if I can gee up some more support, it's not forgotten just in the pipeline as I thought the summer holiday would be easier.

Those in country could donate their pens to Bills charity where there is this age factor and need not for sale but as gifts. I propose this and will send my entry to Bill ie the comp for Arthritus Sufferers.

I went in a contest for Arthritis Sufferers a few years ago, the pens were taken an Arthritis place where a group of people with Arthritis and therapists voted for the best design pen.

While that is a good idea, people should not feel obliged to do that, they may be turning one of these pens for someone they know.

I was with Mark involved in the comp where the entries were judged by Arthritus Sufferers these people gave their reasons that were an eye opener at the time (many years ago), since our competitions are getting firm rules judging is of no consequence for me I enter to support the Forum my main aim I like a challenge. Thank you for offering to assist with colour balance using a white background with my system this would help me why I use the blue cloud background normally as my camera balances to that not using a rest (now termed aid) is a pain in the bum as a pen rolls however it gave me a challenge looking forward to all the twists and turns knowing just what it takes to run anything. My entry will be a one off full of mystery and satisfaction.

I was pleased with 15 entries for the last competition and the one I ran in Jan 2015 also 15, but I wouldn't be doing the best I can if I don't try to increase the number of entries. I can only try to get more entrants, unfortunately Jim has still banned the use of a mini digger or a club.

No more obligation than the winners of the previous competition donating their prizes to charities my proposal was based on a previous competition where the actual pens were numbered in another country at an extra meeting of a group of arthritus sufferers in the USA we entrants all sent our pens to one source, the joy they the actual users had to obtain the pen they could actually use was apparent they then wrote a note to say what they looked for and found great for them the needs were vital and so different.

This competition running will be judged by eye and personal preference as well mostly by non sufferers another novel approach.Long years observing people choose any pen at a stall etc often for someone else very interesting.

Yes, but nobody asked them to donate the prizes they did it because they wanted to. If you wish to start a charity appeal, please start a new thread this is not really the place.

We will be judging this the same way we judge all Competitions, each member has one vote. I don't know of any arthritis groups, but I can see that it would be beneficial to have the judging done by experts in the subject. This competition will run as planned, but if anybody who knows a group of Arthritis Sufferers wishes to run another one later in the year, please let the committee know you will be more than welcome.

As an incentive for people who have never entered one of our competitions I will offer a closed end pen mandrel for a kit of choice, if I don't have the kit, I will need the tube sent to me and of course the tube will be sent back with the mandrel. I will also include 5 nice wood blanks to help you on your way to creating a masterpiece.

Criteria:

1. There needs to be at least two people in the competition who have never entered one of our Pen Competitions before.

2. A minimum post count of 25, just introduce yourself and ask a couple of questions and 25 posts will come round so quick.

3. I will decide who wins the mandrel from all the new entrants.

If you don't know what closed end pens are like then have a look at this thread (http://www.penturners.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9142) to see 15 wonderful closed end pens.

For those of you who don't have any ideas for making a pen for Arthritis sufferers click on this google link (https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=pens+for+arthritis+sufferers+uk&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=xq_JVrGDBuLS8AeO2IGoCw) then click on Images. You will find a wealth of shapes and sizes and if you don't find something there to jolt your imagination maybe look at some arthritis websites.

It's only a few days until the start of March's Competition, so if you pull your finger out this weekend you could have a few pens to choose from to enter your best one into the competition. With the great Prizes on offer I hope we will have a record turnout, so thanks to DaveyGee for putting up those great prizes, if you haven't seen what's on offer look here.
