Woody you mentioned sometime back that you had bought the ultima hollowing system. Following protracted board room battles senior management has agreed to the purchase of one. So my friend is it worth it and which is the best to buy and what accessories do you need.

Hi Keith I just got the basic med kit and the swan neck with the tear drop scrapper I have only used it a few times and so far my honest opinion is first it isn't as good as the roly Munro but it is a hundred pound cheaper none the less I think it will be a good tool to have once I get to grips with it the major thing to get right is the amount of cutter you need exposed the R/M was .5mm and for fine cuts this one is about the same, another thing is you need the tool rest quite away from the work to start with because of all the nobly bits I used it on an end grain vase first with some good results after I got used to it shavings were flying of and within a very short space of time I was doing finishing cuts next I tried a side grain bowl and it worked equally as well but be prepared you will have to get used to it I got mine mainly for deep vases and I think it will be OK including the swan neck scrapper which will take other tips as well I hope this is of some help to you

Take a guess
Just a thought Keith, Simon Hope was at Harrogate last year sell his hollowing tools, I bought a couple & have been please with them, might be worth a look if he`s there again.

I have a home made shielded ring tool on which I utilise the Hamlet little brother cutter & shield, my only bugbear with it is they are prone to clogging, not so much on greener wood more so on dry timber.

I made one of them years ago Doug with the little brother cutter & shield a mate borrowed it then moved never seen him or it since I had the same problems as you till I made it so it made very fine cuts then I had no problems with it till I loaned it out LOL I have never tried Simon's one seen them at the Spalding woodwork show they did look well made
