A good first effort Terry. Its hard to tell from the photo mate but with the oak pen is the barrel slightly thicker than the centre fitting.

Thanks gents
The holly is lighter than the photo suggests with some nice markings in it and yes the barrel on the oak is slightly thicker than the centre fitting but I did turn it down to the bushings.

I've got another Euro to do which I started using Zebrano wood but unfortunately the wood cracked while I was turning it so I need to get some more tubes for it. I'm off to Snainton woodturning supplies tomorrow to get some. I suppose I had better take my credit card as I generally spend a fortune each time I go!!!!

They are very good efforts Terry, when using new bushings you can have the problem that Keith pointed out, what i do to over come this problem is shown in this close up image ...

slimline_center_band.jpg

Turning a radius at the end of each barrel stops the top edge showing sharp above the center band ... Ignore the bloke in the center band seen taking the photo ... :whistling:

Snainton is a place i have visited regular, and can concur that the credit card is a must ...

Point taken Jim. I never thought to try the ring up to the barrels before I took it off the lathe.
If you go to Snainton I presume you live in Yorkshire.

Aye a do ...

West Yorkshire, Near Ponte .... :bwink:

Nice pens, Terry. Much better than my first attempt, still used by my dear long-suffering wife. Will publish a pic if I get the chance.

Don't throw out tubes if the wood cracks, just turn the wood down until its so thin it breaks away from the tubes. Then use a skew in 'planing' mode to clean the glue and wood residue off the tubes. Then try again! I sometimes take three attempts for one reason or another (mostly related to my own stupidity) before finishing a pen.

Thanks Jimjam66. I did exactly what you say about turning the wood down and it was a success. I've only just finished the pen 15 minutes ago. I'll post it on the forum tomorrow after I've taken a photo.

Regards
Terry
