Wife wants to go to Ikea tomorrow, nearest one is Warrington. Isn't there an Axminster store there?

Take a guess
Aye, and not by pennies either Doug...

Don't get me wrong, I understand companies will price an item at what they think the market will stand & so price rises bare no relation to a percentage rise, but when they put up a single machine by hundreds of pounds it does rather stick in the claw.

That said we are all free to shop around & fortunately there does appear to be more outlets now for buying specialised equipment so there are alternatives. I'm afraid for me Axminster is fast becoming like a reference library, a place to look but not to buy, which is a shame.

I guess its so they can knock the prices down more when they have their sales and in the mean time people will get caught at the higher prices.

As someone pointed out on another forum, Axminster put their prices up once a year when they print their catalogue whereas others tend to slip in a few price rises throughout the year.

Once the catalogue is printed their prices stay fixed until the next one is produced.

Not that that makes price rises any more palatable. but when did you ever know prices to go down?

Thing is tho, even the machinery they had in stock, already bought & paid for by them at a lower price have also had their prices raised, surely existing stock should stay at the previous price and only new stock be at the higher price!!
Yes, I know petrol stations etc do it too, just shows how much we get ripped off for

The trouble with Axy today is they are expanding at a very fast rate and the are producing wore for industry back when they had just 3 shops in axminster town any one of us could save and buy almost anything in there catalogue and price rises were still in our reach but now they have grown and left most of us behind also the quality of there product is way below what it was at one time I would recommend them to most people but not any more I'm afraid as an example band saws at one time we would have had a lot to choose from and very few for industry now it has reversed saw benches were the same but not any more as an example this package deal was only about £600 when it first come out but now the same saw is over £1,500 Axminster Trade AW12BSB2 Saw Bench & Extension Table - PACKAGE DEAL - Saw Benches - Sawing - Wood Working | Axminster.co.uk how do you justify that

I understand where Walter is coming from, but put it this way.

They had priced their gear up at the start of the year.. Simple, but as supply prices creep up to them through the year they take the hit on the profit made. that is why they are selling existing stock in the shop for the increased price, because they didn't charge you the increase when they got charged for it.

The fact that they are expanding at an alarming rate means that they will have buying power and manage to get good rates so they can fix the prices through the year.

They are not the only company that have gone down this route. Most of the big suppliers have either farmed out the manufacture to china (the Nova is typical of that) or hike the prices big once per year. I work in an industry that do just the same thing.

But anyway, Warrington does have a Axminster enjoy your day and take plenty of wedge with you.. Even better you could buy yourself some of those candle holder inserts from Ikea as well.. They are a good price as well..

Talk about two birds one stone..:winking:

Ikea is a good example of why someone should invent the car boot lathe. In she goes and we stay in the car park turning a pen or two. I can think of no valid reason whatsoever for going into Ikea... apart from the pencils.:funny::funny::funny::funny::funny::funny:

The practicalities of changing their prices on their items as they run out of "old stock" are about as viable as making the moon habitable. It would not have come as a great surprise that the prices go up on 1jan, they have done it that way for many years. The reality is that many items have been bought back to the uk due to quality issues, their chucks for example, and until they manage to fill the Devon factory with the Bulgarian immigrants currently encamped at Dover, the uk labour rates are going to push the retail prices above the increase of the rate of inflation. The Chinese prices are going through the roof as the chaps from Beijing improve their standard of living. So, I would like to predict that Axminster will put up their prices on 1jan next year, I hope that this doesn't come as a surprise.

I sympathise with you Alex. I've only had to catch a train twice in the last 5 years, both times last month. The first time going out it was 2hrs late getting there (for a 2hr journey). Coming home it was 1/2 late because of leaves on the line and so they didn't go all the way and I had to catch another train with 2 carriages and about 150 people. The second time it was 3hrs late getting there and only 15mins late coming home. I worked out of Amsterdam for 5 years and it was quicker (55 mins) than going to London (scheduled 2.5hrs), cheaper and just about always on time. Its a pity I can't fly to London for the same price I used to pay for the flights to Amsterdam (£25). The train to London is about £45. Pure madness.

Dad and I were deciding on a new bandsaw for his shed/workshop from Axminster on New years eve. He settled for one at £179.00 with free delivery, pretty good for what it was.

He came around on New Years day to order it online and the price had gone up to £249.00!:nooidea:

How on earth can they justify a price rise like that? It's the same saw that was sat in the warehouse the day before and making a profit.:rolling:

Dads now decided on a Record Power BS250 from another company and to be honest, has been put off from buying from Axminster again.

Sorry to sort of hijack the thread but something I felt I would like to share with you all.

We are waiting for an IKEA to materialise they are playing hard ball with our local Govt and good luck to them fixing their gaze onnew to be released land lot of playing the field and nurturing those who can assist I would say with the largest Woolworths in Australia, Costco and Masters across the potential road things are looking up for us. Firms that play catalogue games in Pen turning supplies usually crucify their agents more than us in between catalogues leaving heaps of bad taste all round and bruised knuckles. Classic example in Australia is Carba-Tec many a story in this large venture IMHO.

Dont take any wooden coins or promises Love many trust few and always paddle your own canoe.

Kind regards Peter.:rolling::shocking:
