Fresh of the lathe today made from a piece of 8" x 3" brown Oak Phill gave me last time he was up but it isn't finished yet as the black spray needs 24 hours to fully harden I have put some sanding sealer on the bare wood and I need to get some gold gilding cream to rub in the grain then polish the whole thing but again I'm not completely satisfied with it I think it would look better if it was a bit taller maybe another 3/4"

Gilding paste is all well and good dad but seen it so many times I ain't so sure it would benefit this bowl.
Maybe another coat of black would do the trick.

That looks beautiful Woody :thumbs::thumbs:

I did a few of these a while ago, but used spirit stain instead of ebonising spray, if you are going to use gilding wax a good tip I picked up was to spread it on, let it dry a while & then wipe off using a cloth with lemon oil on it. Also it's not a bad idea to use a suede brush to clean the grain out first, not that I'm trying to teach you to suck eggs more for those who might not.

This is the effect it gives which I really like

Lovely job there Woody, nice to see what can be done with a piece which was too big for me to handle.

Might be a bit cheeky asking for it back now.

Normally when I ebonize Oak I would use Vinegar and wire wool Doug but I thought it might bleed across the spray has filled some of the grain on the outside so the gilding wont work so well so I will get some more Oak and do another one

It will Woody, the trick is to cut a little V where you want the dividing line to be & then burn the V with wire, I prefer to rub inside the V with Formica to burn it, but each to their own.
The burning seals the ends of the grain in the V & stops the spirit stain bleeding across, or in your the case vinegar. I still mask the area I don't want staining but this is more to prevent stained fingers etc colouring the parts I don't wanted stained.
