I was reading a book on turning boxes last week. The book was OK but the guy was using a spindle gouge when hollowing out into end grain. I always thought you had to use a bowl gouge for this because of the heavier steel and the dangers of tools snapping.

Hi Keith there is nothing wrong with using a spindle gouge on a bow because normally they are small the thickness of a bowl gouge comes into play as you get bigger and deeper

Thanks gents. I'm going to have a stab at boxes. Most people at work have got a pen so will try another tack.
I see Snainton have got the robert sorby spiralling and texturing system discounted from £153 to £115. Just got to think of a reason to convince senior management she'd love a 310 mile round trip from wrexham.

When I first started turning I didn't have a bowl gouge so I used the spindle gouge - mind you I have not turned anything big....
And I still haven't got one yet...

I'm still on Neil's thread, now what did I come here for?

Oh yeah, I use whatever I think is right at the time. No rules.

I think it's more to do with how the gouge is inserted into the handle, if the gouge has a tang like a file then this isn't as strong as the whole diameter of the gauge going into the handle.
