As a non-turner but someone interested in old crafts and their manufacturing techniques, I wondered if anyone on the forum has ever tried to turn Jet.

I have collected it from the beaches for years and most pieces are quite small but, last year, I found this lovely, huge piece and now think it may be big enough for a pen blank. It weighs about 400g. It would be interesting to hear your views.

Yes I have turned jet that I also found on a beach, I made a pendant and it was quite nice to turn, I have been told from another turner that it is a pig to turn, but I got on okay with it.

A lovely piece you have there and a beautiful product it could make

I spend quite a bit of time up at Whitby & often wonder what I might be able to do with Jet, so I will be watching with great interest

I have lots of smaller pieces so Ed is going to have a go at turning some of them first to see how they work. In the post to him Tuesday..............
