I'm after some advice with regard to a "plastic" rod of some sort that I can turn on the lathe & then cut a thread in with taps to make knobs for my pillar drill.

I'm after a green coloured rod & my searches have come up with oilon
Oilon Rod - Direct Plastics Limited

I know nothing about this material so wondered if anyone else thought this would be suitable or could recommend anything else?

Many thanks

I have dealt with Direct Plastics for many years Doug.
Point being they are a reputable company with excellent service dept and technical departments.
A phone call would stand you in good stead to get the right product but it looks like you have reasearched well as that would be the rod I would go for.
By using the casting method it gives the material a stress free set which enables it to keep its set strength and less liable to flex.
Extrusion relies on heat and force to mould the form therefore can only retain its formed memory without being reheated or tampered with, you will create heat while turning and tapping unless you are extremely careful and acurate.

I buy my plastics from them and they do offer first class advice, I haven't used oilon so if you do please let us know what it is like, I have used golf balls before for the ends.
