Lovely Pen Ray. I have brought a couple of these but have not tried them yet.

:thumbs:Vic:thumbs:

If you mean the pen kits Vic, they are really nice and very easy. If you mean the blank they are a bugger. The first one blew out just as I drilled through it and this one chipped like hell. I managed to get rid of most of them but there is one chip hidden under the clip.

Yes Ray I mean the kits, I just had a recent order from Timberbits and I had ordered 4 but have yet to have a go at them.

I used to have loads of issues drilling out some of the acrylics in particular the Inlace ones they are very hard.
I think I have solved it now by drilling on the lathe rather than the drill press and cutting on a very slow speed and an even slower feed rate. I also keep clearing the cuttings very regularly. Long winded but proving to be successful in my case.

What I do is as you say drill slowly around 450rpm but also as in the case of the lucida drill at 6mm then 7.5mm and then 9mm.This way you don't stress the blank nor overheat it !!!

A lovely looking pen and by the sounds of it you've done very well to finish it.

That's a good tip Terry I hadn't thought of that. I'll try it with the wood blanks too ad I have a problem with tubes sticking part way in. By the way, you say 9mm, I'm using a 27/64th is there any difference?

Without putting a vernier on it I couldn't say but I am sure T/Bits instructions say 9mm !!!

The trouble with drilling some plastics isn't the drilling its the exit that blows the blank especially the round blanks it is best to cut them to long drill to the right depth and then cut the solid end of after if your drilling on a pillar get a bit of wood about 2"x 2" drill then drill a hole in it the same size as round blank cut it through the hole and then clamp your round blank in it then drill and you wont get a break out as the blank is supported all the way round

I think I must have been fortunate in the past as this was the first time it had totally failed. I've tiny blowouts but they've been on the waste side of the brass tube. I'll need to be extra careful next time. I think the acrylester inlace blanks are just very brittle, they seem to be the most troublesome

Beautiful pen Ray, well worth the effort mate. I agree about how brittle the Inlace/acrylester blanks are, lathe drilling for these does make it easier. Or what Woody said.
