A lad at work has know for quite a time about me turning pens ... Well he asked me last week if he brought me some wood would i make him two pens with celtic crosses in them, but to make them different. Well here is the first of the two. This is the wood he chose out of the pile he gave me. He didn't know what it was, nor do i ...

This is the other pen, i now believe the wood to be Australian Red Wood ... Comparing it with some that i have .. :thinks:

Two stunners there Jim, love em both, but once again I think the center band on the top one suits better.
Having said that the second one does have a character of its own so maybe I am not so sure, unlike me to be indecisive, I think do I?

It is great to have opinions George, and it is good to post them, i can see where you are coming from regarding the bands, but i feel the drop area around the band is or can be to big, so i put my own in to keep a straight line helping me keep a couple of mills thicker .. :bwink:

I agree 100% with that statement Jim That is why I have mixed the middles on the Slimline I have done.
I don't yet have enough experience to know all the alternatives but do tend to favor the larger center bands of, I think it's the comfort pen.
I do prefer to see a smooth transition between the lower and upper parts of the pen and you do carry that off well, does that mean that all the slimline kits come with the smaller bands?
I have had some really ill fitting ones which I have modified after the event in some cases.

All slimlines have the small bands. But removing these allows you to be more creative with them, if you had to work with the pen using the original bands i doubt many would be bought ... :thinks:

Would that be Red Gum?
I think the gold suits that wood better.
