All comments welcome good or bad, it is the only way I will improve

This is a slimline twist pen made from aquatic sand and no resin has been used

For your first pen that is amazing well done the only observation is have you slightly under cut on the nib end or is it the photo and I must say that is a great finish on the pen

A very good effort Steve, if no resin was used can you tell what you did use .. :bwink:

Now that's a great start..the only way is downhill from here Steve..

Looks nicely finished but it looks just a "little bit" (fraction) over turned at the nib end, you might feel a very small lip there. Only small tho. And having said that its a real beut..:thumbs:

That looks a great effort:thumbs: when you say aquatic sand is that a euphemism for some kind of corian or is it really aquatic sand you have glued to the tubes?

It is aquatic sand from one of my tropical tanks, and is black the white specks are the grains that have been turned. I had to use a modified engineering tool to turn the sand as it blunted the wood turning tools I have. I bonded the sand to the tubes with an industrial adhesive similar to CA but stronger, then polished with a glass elastic wheel and then a glass polish ( I used to do a lot of glass engraving ). I just wanted to try something different that I hadn't seen before. I love one offs so pen turning really appeals to me, and I feel you are only limited by what you can imagine.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words of encouragment:thumbs:

Very nice indeed but to use sand an I'm guessing binding it with ca for a first attempt tells me that you're not new to this turning malarkey.

I brought my first wood lathe maybe 2 months ago now, spent a while just turning wood to get used to the toolsmaking nothing but shavings. Watched lots of youtube vids and reading from the internet.I turned a simple Christmas ornament , a ring and a bangle. Played with acrylics which became 2 pens in the end with help from a friend who showed me and explained about steps where the joints are ( under cuts) I then tried the sand pen. As well as buying pen kits I have brought lots of tubing to practice different things on. As a retired design engineer I love doing odd things with strange materials. I also have a lot of engineering knowledge so the use of a metal lathe might have helped in the transition to wood.I am at the moment thinking about using copper sulpate crystals.

Thank you, this is probably the biggest complement I will get :thinks::winking:

Steve that is bar none an amazing first and best of the breed amusing how you intend using crystals of Copper Sulphate. I give you also full credit for the great fit and making successfully a true Slimline where the kit originated and the way it was first used, as a fish fancier for seventy years this pen is unique deserving of great recognition among Fish Keepers everywhere. Great entrance mate.I used to keep 40 aguariums in my now blank storage room during the 70,s making a journey to Singapore to purchase,bring back German Bred Discus in the days when this was possible.

Kind regards Peter.:claps::claps:
