Ok guys

I have been given a table lamp kit so will have to turn the actual body between the centres. Now I have never turned between centres. I know there are lots of hints and tips on u tube but just wanted to know from trusted sources (pen turning forum) for any hints, tips, does and donts. I have a beautiful piece of spalted beech which I will ultimately use.

as woody said
but also
use a rubber mallet to make an indent in spindle with your drive spur( before putting spur in lathe)
sometimes i make a small drill hole in the ends first
some people put a cross on the spur end with a bs first

Another source of visual help can be U Tube sometimes when confronted by a new task it can simplify details. Also your local Wood group you will find has special interest groups of people in mine there are so many of these that meet separately at their homes or club house between meetings. I always found seeking out demos by specialist turners at conventions with visiting known so called experts. Having spent days with some overseas people sponsored by arts council, local government, contacts made at art shows word of mouth often have yielded incredible results, sources of timber etc. Living as I do in a vast country your phone can be your best friend. Had three days with one of your best from the top tip of Scotland that was a revelation for me for a total of 30.00 dollars a day for three days through our Arts Council including lunches and continual demos with six others subsidised by the Federal Govt.

Not if you know where to get them from, I have a spare New one to fit in the chuck and a New 2mt live centre one for the tailstock, £45 for the pair plus a bit of postage.

Don't know what it is like where you are, but 1MT here are going the way of the dinnersaws , when you get your new lathe I would get 2MT, you get such a huge choice in 2MT.

The first lathe I had, which I was given didn't have a bore in the headstock. I didn't have a clue what 1, 2 or 3MT meant and I was lucky that the subsequent lathes have got 2 and 3 MT bore, it was by luck rather than design, but I am pleased luck was on my side.
