Hi everybody,
although I have been a member for a few weeks I have only just seen this place to introduce myself. My name is Bill, am Scottish but have lived in north Yorkshire, where my wife comes from, since coming out of the army in 1964. I have done some turning, on and off, for years. Made a lathe out of scrap that worked, after a fashion, many years ago. I turned bowls and platters. I was really inspired by the lady turner Joey Richardson, her platters got me interested. Due to breathing problems I stopped turning, engraving glass and making walking sticks and crooks, oil painting was doing me no good, the white spirit, or turps bad for me.
Then my younger son gave me a pen making kit and showed me some he had made, aye that was me hooked. So I have now turned twenty four slimline pens, but have made most of those fatter by inserting rings, or spacers from whatever, off cuts from the acrylic blanks for example. My last four had coke can aluminium snaking along, and look quite good. The rings for those I cut out of alloy angle.
I live very near another member who lives in West Witton. I have found everybody very helpful and friendly, very nice.

A retrospective welcome Bill. I vowed years ago I'd never make pens, now I make very little else. You've fallen for the ol' first pen kit routine, now you're hooked too.

Nice one, Bill - good to have you here with us!

Have you considered buying some Euro centre bands and using these instead of the bands that come with the Slimline styles? These give you a "fatter" and nicer-looking pen than the skinny ones. You do have to cut a rebate to accommodate the Euro c/b but that should be no problem for a guy with your background.

Regards,

Bob.

Ah so Bob,
Tell me more about the euro centre bands please. I was just turning the blanks down to the brass tube and gluing on what ever came to hand really, nice wood or plastic to match or contrast with the blank.

Thank you for the warm welcome guys, very kind of you. Must say that Canberra weather sounds too warm for me, would kill me off for sure. Regarding seeing my turnings, I am unsure how to get them on here. Can I send them from my phone, if so, to where exactly. Give me a clue and I could try one or two anyway. I do have a couple of plates or platters I made out of ripple sycamore. Gave a lot of my stuff to my elder son. I do have the pens of course.

Hi Jim,
yes you welcomed me when I first joined which I appreciated but I could not figure out how to respond. I did get some kits from Dan and some other stuff from Phil. The better kits I have still to do. Bit of snakewood is for one of them. Posting photographs is my next problem, any advice there Jim?
