Welcome to the forum Jim. Loads of good advice on here. A club is a good idea but there are some good teachers on You Tubetoo. I would recommend Sam Angelo the Wyoming Wood turner, he is an excellent teacher. From the UK Mike Waldt is very good and has ideas covering the basics as does Sam. I also found videos by Brian Havens which explain the theory of why certains cuts are used.
For books I found Walter Halls book on turning pens very helpful when I started, Walter will probably be along in a minute as he is on this forum. For more general turning Richard Raffans books are hard to beat in my humble opinion. These can all probably be obtained from your local library and turn up from time to time on ‘t’bay and Amazon. Have fun learning and never be afraid to ask.
