Started selling in a local craft shop this week, already sold 4 walking sticks 2 pens and a fishing priest

Yesterday i was contacted by the shop saying that trading standards had visited the shop to check all the goods for sale.
I passed with flying colours allegedly ?? whatever that means

What were they looking for and what are the pitfalls to be aware of :thinks:

Take a guess
You should have public & product liability insurance, what folks don't seem to realise is if someone sues you successfully, if you are not a limited company then they can take you for everything you own including your house if you own it.

I realise this is highly unlikely but for what this cover costs I personally don't think it's worth the risk not to have it particularly in this crazy compensation claiming culture we live in.

Some of the things they look for are lamps and candle sticks so I would check them out to see were you stand with them they have got laws in place that you have to comply with regarding stickers (max 40 wat) cable clamps and grommets also as Doug said get insurance or you could find yourself in big trouble

I have got public & product liability insurance , that was part of the deal before i could show my goods in the shop.
Lots more to learn rather than just selling from a stall :thinks:.

Johnny your variety will carry you through with regard to insurance sometimes the Wood group membership gives you an umbrella cover as a mamber but certainly the club will be fully covered often by a larger State Wood Group where they welcome others to come in with them to increase their coverage etc. Here where I live such a group is in Victoria and our Wood Guild is a member for this purpose and by sattelite people like yourself can get great cover at a good price . I do wish you well if you venture into toys choices re paint laquers small parts that could break off etc, your local council or govt will have regs and requirements.

From what is alleged it was an anonymous phone call to trading standards, possibly an old craft business partner of the shop owner.
Having seen and witnessed the nasty banter on FB , it seems to be a cut throat business this craft world.
Mainly women i may add.
Should i just move on to pastures new ??
