I have been asked if I can make a few handles for crochet hooks to help people who cannot hold the thin hook as it is. I was thinking of starting with a pen sized blank but was hoping for suggestions from the experts on how to go about it. The first needle is 4mm diameter with a flat spot in the centre. The flat bit increases the diameter, so I intend grinding the edges of the flat to the same as the diameter of the rest of the needle. I can drill a 4mm hole in the blank ready to accept the needle hook smeared with glue. Just not sure of the best way to hold it in the lathe.

i would drill blank 4mm
and then re-drill to take the flat spot (only just so it is a tight pressure fit)
drop of epoxy or medium CA
job done blank will hold the tail and flat spot

I would think the ladies would want the flat bit left on that is what keeps the needle up the right way I think the best people to consult are those who use them

The idea of grinding that bit away is because that part would be inside the handle and I thought would split the handle when I try and push it in the handle. But I see what you mean about some sort of indication which way to hold it.

I wasn't sure of the best way to turn it mainly. I could probably drill a bit longer than needed and hold the blank in pin chuck jaws. Part it off near the chuck when finished ?

I wouldn't bother grinding the flat off, simply squeeze it up in vice will push it in
Or drill slightly oversize of the flat and epoxy it in the handle.
Why make work for yourself?

Insert a stick in a chuck drill hole into it, bring up tailstock and shape the blank then part off simples init?

My resident expert tells me the flat is to promote size and advertising, yes you can buy them handled why not get the proposed user determine if this suits them or not. I gave up trying to please quilters, cloth doll makers et al with stuffing sticks, handled felting needles they are like Lace Makers with Bobbins I like this one could you make twenty of them in different colours but change the sizes and vary the hole sizes etc pain in the rear not profitable. No mind if its for the wife whatever she desires for anyone else caution is the watchword IMHO.

Peter.:fingers: Good luck mate.
