I have a cherry tree in the garden and I am going to give it the chop ( and I am not giving out my address). I know how prone it is to splitting but to give me a slightly better chance I thought I would wait until Autumn would I be better waiting a few months more like into winter to give the sap time to drop a bit

Take a guess
Definitely wait until winter Derek if you can, also cut round the pith & get rid, seal the ends & look forward to some lovely blanks

I cut a wild cherry down thirty years ago & planked it in stick & let it dry naturally. It was a lovely timber to work with some great colours.

Winter cut in stick and stored vertical helps.

Peter.

Why do you say vertical Peter? The only timber I would recommend storing vertical is UK sycamore as the timber bruises under the pressure of the sticks and discolours. The horizontal storage helps the timber to resist bowing and cupping as it dries.
