Beware, there is somewhere in the mechanism of the logistics industry a grade one numpty, one who excelled and got a distinction in his jobsworth exams.

A parcel leaves China, escapes intact and starts its journey to Hitchin courtesy of DHL. It's journey is recorded via Leipzig and after three flights over thirty six hours it has arrived at Heathrow. During this time the DHL planning department have calculated that it should transit the burocracy and make it to my front door by Monday.

It's made excellent time and is ahead of schedule and the tracking system says that it is now at Heathrow, and having paid the customs while it was about thirty thousand feet above phnom penn there should have been no obstacle to its smooth and swift transit to Hemel hempstead and on to the driver, Stuart's, transit and on to me at Hitchin.

But the tracking system says it's still at Heathrow?

On the phone and I get told that the package has not been shipped to the depot at Hemel as it was not due to be shipped to me the client until Monday. I pointed out that this was the target date set by DHL themselves and they could have exceeded their own ambitions and provided excellent customer service and satisfaction without straining so much as an eye muscle. Sorry guv but the parcel didn't make the transit to the depot because it had a Monday target date.

Result, one and a half days from China to Heathrow, heathrow to hitchin four days!

Ah yes - DHL, I love em. I particularly like their customs bills which arrive saying payment is overdue and if I don't pay instantly they're going to shoot my children, even though it's the first time they've sent the invoice.

On Wednesday I organised a DHL shipment from Germany. DHL's own time frame was collection from sender on Friday, delivery to me on Monday. Tracking this morning says "awaiting documentation in Germany - goods awaiting collection". I think they need to get some new carrier pigeons.

We stopped using DHL at work, which must have cost them quite a bit of cash for similar reasons Neil ..
