Just a little reminder that you should always wear PPE appropriate to the job you are doing and not take shortcuts or make compromises.

I have finally got around to restoring the Stanley breast drill that Eamonn gave me. More on that later, I am doing a step by step and I will post it when the job is finished. Having stripped it down I was cleaning some of the components with Gunk which if you didn't know is an industrial de-greaser used by engineers and mechanics. Wear gloves it said on the tin, so I did, but the only ones I had were the thin nitrile type that I use with adhesives. I should have used at least a pair of kitchen gloves or something heavier duty.

I did not notice that the tips of two of the fingers of the gloves had been pierced by one of the components until I took them off, by which time I had acquired a couple of minor but quite painful chemical burns to my fingertips, probably as a result of the combination of a concentration of the chemical in the confined space and abrasion from the old toothbrush I was using.

Ouch, you are right about better gloves, I have a box of those ones you use for glue plus I have at least a couple of pairs of the well talked about yellow gloves for use on anything else that's a bit iffy, Ok so you look a prat wearing them but so what, better to be safe! I look a prat anyway so makes no diff :funny:

Blimey I used millions of Gunk in the past and it never did that but then it may have and i was thicker skinned then.
Will certainly heed the warning now though.
I wear gloves as part of my job now and getting quite used to them so will wear them in the shed while they are still free issue to me.

Ouch, as per Grump. Used it many times and never ever had a problem.

However, got me thinking now and will check all my dads old hand drills and check the grease as it might be sulphuric acid rather than grease.:ave_it:

Me too Brian in the '70s when my hobby was pulling Mini engines to bits to make them go faster. I never wore gloves and never had a problem but then I wasn't scrubbing small parts with a toothbrush. I know better for the future.

Having said that I also frequently washed down parts with petrol whilst smoking a fag, stirred my coffee (three sugars then, none now) with oily spanners and sprayed cellulose paint in a confined space without a mask and I am still alive. :funny::funny::funny::funny::funny:

You must be using too much Fairy liquid Walter. It's softened your hands too much. More in the garage & less at the sink should do the job.:whistling: bet they're sore though.:sob:

Painful reminder will help us all to be careful takes me back to when we used to empty fire extinguishers to clean gear. Very timely .
