Can these detectors detect a nail in wood? the reason I ask is I am planning to get pallet wood in the future and don't want to ruin my planer thicknesser blades.

Yes they can, but the depth varies from machine to machine, a cheap metal detector would be better.

Hi Bob,

If you can get one, find a second hand metal detector pointer. Expensive, but worth the money as they point directly to the metal object. (Within a 2-3 mm area).

As Peter says Bob, they can be expensive or they can be inexpensive, shop around, read reviews, I'm sure you'll find one at a budget price that suits your needs.

Have a look at Argos or Marlins one of them used to have one for about £30 and it would pick up any metal in pallet wood without a problem.

Big problem with pallets is the fixing nails are often barbed and very hard to extract. I understand where you are coming from though with the thicknesser blades.............ouch.
