My wife came in from shopping this morning and stated that just around the corner men are cutting down trees, wasting not a minute still in slippers off I wonder to be nosey so following the sound of a chainsaw and even worse a chipper. Well on arrival two men cutting down an ash tree a quick word later and it turns out they are only chipping the very small stuff the logs they keep. After a short conversation and giving him my address I wonder off home 15minutes later a knock at the door and a log about 9" and 2 1/2 ft long of Ash.
Well I hear you say not a lot of wood for the title of this post.
Another half an hour later a good friend who I use to work with and also another woodturner phoned "Derek I have a few burrs if you are interested" me " I'll have to think about it" now he is on the phone in stitches knowing exactly what my answer will be, "What time can I come over mate" I says straight away if you like.
Hops into the car and 1/2 hour later I am in his workshop with him covered in shavings rough turning some of the burrs "Wow they look lovely" me looking at about 20 part turned burrs from 18" downwards.
"Come this way and have a look" he opens a brick shed and inside a pile of burrs and other wood, "Take what you want" did I need asking twice me thinks not.
After this and a cuppa into his shed here you are and gives me another burr and a face plate. So onto his second lathe I mount this one so picture this two men on two lathes having a great time turning these wet burrs wood streamers going every where and the odd ping as a little bit flies off, talk about "Happy as a pig in S**T"
So now I think I have wet your appetites I think you would like to see the days little haul.
First the log of Ash may not be the most exciting but I love any bit of wood I can gather.
The pile of wood in the next photo's are Top unknown and the two below that Oak. The Plank under the rough turned bowl is Sycamore on top of that some small yew logs. The slabs they are on are 18" X 18" to give an idea of size
And the rest are all Chestnut burrs. Lastly the rough turned burr from this little lot showing some of the beautiful grain it should look stunning once properly turned and a finish applied.
The burs are only from branches the main trunk has still got to come down with the promise of some when it does. Am I happy YOU BET
