Thanks to all that replied to ADVICE PLEASE on my last thread. Although still waiting for my results I feel more positive after your comments. Looking forward to the future I am thinking of upgrading ????. I have a Trend Half Mask using a P2 filter. I am thinking I may be better off changing to a Powered Respirator, but which one. Can you help me to decide which one to get.

Glen

If you work with hardwoods or MDF you need one that provides APF20 protection. For powered respirators that is one that meets the TH2 classification fitted with a particulate filter.

The Trend Airshield pro and the 3m Versaflo meet this spec, the JSP and Axminster only provide APF10 protection (TH1 classification).

Here are links to the various HSE publications on which I have based this advice:

Glad you are feeling better about it Glen.

Good links that Walter provided.

The link to HSE website that gives you a good list of things to check out, what to do and what to look out for.

Resources - Respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

This is what I have, along with a decent extractor with Ptfe filter bag.

Arco Website - 3M Versaflo Respiratory Helmet M-407 from 3M - Product 20V0033

Best thing I ever got, I know it looks expensive but really worthwhile.

Dust filter are £10 a piece. Fume ones around £16. All depends on how much exposure you have to how long they will last, however the fume ones have a short shelf life of 1 year.

I tried a helmet shoulder wrap but found it smothering. I have an extraction to atmosphere in line fan immediately above and close to the action. A dust extraction unit under and back of the mandrel. These work for me. My big boy sander I open the front door of the workshop and let it rip with a fan behind to flatten burl.

Peter.

Check this out Glen, not sure if Chas sold them all or not. Worth a punt if you want to try one of the powered units.

When I turn pens I use these type of masks, I can and do wear them for hours on end at work, the ones I use are rated to use for welding fumes.

I have bought a Dust be gone masks, for when I use up my supply of the above.

For bowls etc I use a Trend Air Shield Pro bought from the UK. Took me a while to get used to it but ok now.

I have the Trend Airshield Pro too. Does a good job but is a little heavy and needs readjusting fairly frequently. You soon get used to it though. Be careful not to overcharge the battery as the charger supplied is quite basic. I replaced it with a smart charger bought off eBay which works fine and reduces the risk of overcharging and ruining the battery which is expensive to replace!
