I am confused

So .... today I turned two slimline pens and they seemed absolutely fine... I will post photos when I take some...

Then I turned a blank for a bolt action and it’s so off true you could trip over it...

I have asked a question about disassembly of that on another thread but how can the above happen?

Two fine and one not?

At least I found out how to align the lathe

As Walter said. Many reasons but One that stands out is:

Did you use a set of bushes that you have used on an “out of aligned “ lathe ?

It could be that the old bushes are out of round due to the above.

Sloppy bushes ,too tight locking up,the tail stock sloppy and variable when locking up.

I now think:
Sloppy bushes - nope brand new as I have not made one before..
Too tight locking up - very strong possibility
the tail stock sloppy - defiantly now sorted
and variable when locking up - possibly most of the above.
