A safer thing to do would be Mocha Diffusion Ceramics. I bought a beautiful little jug with this curious technique once, which involves a special mix of chemicals to create an effect very similar to that done on wood, but much less Heath Robinson

I’ve seen this being done in a video somewhere, quite mesmerising.

As far as the other thread goes it should have been deleted not just closed.

Sorry but I can’t agree with you William. If a dangerous practice is doing the rounds then it should be highlighted & discussed to stop anyone else from trying it. By deleting it would be hiding the dangers. As a responsible experienced turner I feel I have a duty of care to less experienced turners to point out the dangers which lurk in our turning world.

Whether it’s banned off the forums or not, there are loads of tutorial videos on YouTube. The one that got me was a comparison burn between 5000 volts and 10000 volts. Goodness knows what current is being used and how that voltage is being generated :shocking:

Come on gents, Pleeeease!! I can see little point in closing a thread, still less deleting a thread if everyone is going to talk about it again in a new thread. Can we move on please? I think the overwhelming sentiment of the members who have expressed an opinion is that we just don't need to go there any more.

Can I just add a little something Phil?
I have seen this done a few times on youtube and was always really impressed by it.
I had never heard the voltages used in it or how ridiculously dangerous it is!
I've certainly Learnt something from these two posts.

Thank you Ray for your original post and something worth having a look at if it does not require a kiln to get the effect otherwise the poor wood item may just go up in smoke.

What was banned was a post from me that found quite a discussion that resulted in the closure of that string. My understanding is that subject is closed. At the same time I posted on the U Beaut Forum in Australia where a sensible discussion resulted, still does. The theme on our forum was safety. Ray presented this line here of a system that uses chemicals to obtain an image.

Peter.

I think a more accurate account would be to say we were politely asked not to discuss the subject. The said subject is apparently banned on other forums but plenty of resource is available on YouTube. Have I been cryptic enough :thinks:
