Yesterday quick visit to my Wood Craft Guild, situated on the edge of the city on Lions Youth Haven Farm.

The day was stary bright, bad for pics outside. The complex is now enormous, eight Vicmarc VL100,s several large Vicmarcs, just a few of the other machines,Sawstop, Hammer Saw, etc and an eight foot high bandsaw etc.

Outer sheds have a blacksmiths forge and gear ,many sheds, Wood Storage. The dust extraction has to be reconnected to all the lathe booths ,work in progress. I am a Life Member here but not so frequent visits these days. Its gone crazy the expression A Rat with a Gold Tooth comes to mind with the present committee spending lavishly.

Peter.

Penpal It looks like a fun factory for those who like wood...

A Rat with a Gold Tooth ?:thinks:

What’s its purpose is it for any one to go and use or is it a teaching facility?

For anyone Kevin but used as I was when it was first formed we used to meet at each others workshop. The battle to raise funds for the location and shed etc took its toll on me over the years. An example one time we used to hold our exhibition and allow a budget of 15000 dollars for this each year, very generous prizes etc. One year ,the start of the rot was they had an open bar for members the night before the exhibition and members drank through 1500 dollars in grog alone. Took a long time to raise that money.

Came the time the once a yr Working With Wood Show offered us a 1/4 of the Shed space at the showgrounds free each yr to hold our exhibition, no charges from them to bench and sell members wooden sales. The Club hummed and went on a treat before accepting this ,some of the flash mob who said they would rather the Club ran their own exhibition etc.

Membership is not restricted in any way. my Life Membership has saved me a real lot of annual subs. I have some good friends there still. Recent buildings plus the others make this a huge task to maintain. Lions Club fees on their farmland are very high now. Penmaking has a special interest group but the majority think its a waste of time. This led by the feelings of Richard Raffan et al who say they will die never having made a pen.

Peter.
