I got fed up of using a large disc in the lathe to clean up the ends of my pen blanks OK OK I know I don't make that many anyway I always ended up usin just the centre and my decicated disc belt sander does not have a large enough table to make something for that.
So a little while ago I had to replate one of the discs on my hope sanding system I managed to rescue all the hardwear from it and cut a disc of mdf and a thin piece of ply. This is what I ended up with and it fits nicley into my madrel collet if I take the shaft out. For the discs I use the self adhesive backed discs from my larger sander, I van get 4 small discs for this.
So along with this and a chuck set up in the tailstock and the set of transfer punches this works a treat

Why not mate use and reuse methods are important when they solve the problem. I use the whole disk on my large sander so that suits me. Greater accuracy using your method I like for most penmakers. Space is a strong advocate for smaller.

My recycling has become an enormous problem that now demands a big clean up. I have started in the workshop ,just got to take on the outside.
