Made these, among others years ago. The osprey was my first ever attempt at marquetry and the background unfortunately was a poor choice but all I had available at the time without spending money. Tiger also could have been better.
All the designs except the osprey were inspired by Japanese drawings so are deliberately stylised

I had swapped a few surplus trout from my fishing exploits for large sack of veneers from the owner of a factory which made coffins:whistling::funny:

I don't think I've posted them previously but appologies if I have - pink bulldogs have notoriously poor memories.

Cheap as chips to make Jim, Only need a surgical scalpel, a few blades and the means to glue clamp to a backboard. Not like this turning lark

Very nice Bob, they may be as cheap as chips to make but you still need the skill.

It's not a frame Jim, just an illusion - the b wink suggests you did:winking:. It's all cut in as part of the face veneer.

The picture is cut (window method) into the backing veneer with all cuts made from the back / reverse side, pieces inserted and taped on the front face.
A backing board 18mm ply, chipboard or MDF is cut and the edges veneered and trimmed then the back veneer and the face picture are glued on to the board with PVA wood glue. The whole lot has to be clamped very carefully, (I made up a jig originally but later bought an old cast iron letterpress). When set, the tape is scraped off and veneers carefully scraped level and sanded before finishing - nowt to it.
