Thought... haven't been able to turn for a couple of weeks (life takes over sometimes) ...how thin can I turn something... hmmm... just a fun little thing... (Sophie my eldest daughter called it a pixie cup). Natural edge, 70mm tall and the cup is 1mm thick and the stem is 2mm thick.. turned from a small branch of wet walnut.

Wasn't overly concerned with the design, was just trying to go as thin as I dared without turning it into a funnel!!!

First time actually trying to go as thin as I can... done it by accident many times!!! That just one last cut syndrome lol!

That's pretty cool Steve, not sure I could achieve that thin a wall! I'm sure the pixies will love it :wink:

I know it was a great exercise in thin turning but if you had made the foot a little bigger it could have been a great turning altogether. Having said that a good bit of turning I find wet wood is the easiest to thin turn as long as it is all done in one go and not left overnight half way through, yes I know I have done it and ended up through the side:funny:

What a fun thing Steve is it fully dry yet? Neat conversation piece.

Peter.

Thanks Peter. It was from a small branch that I cut about 5 months ago.. so not dry yet... looking to see how much the shape may change now it's been turned so thin!

Nice excercise Steve, turned well. Too fragile for me, still at the thick stage myself.
:thumbs::thumbs:

Thanks Peter! First time for me... have always been at the thick stage! But sometimes you just have to have a go... that's how I make all our firewood anyway!

Thanks Derek! I did intend for it to be a larger foot originally... but as we all know... sometimes you have to change the plan when on the lathe... the thin stem was in danger of losing its integrity - so had to go with plan B for the base... otherwise it would have had to have been called a flower! Lol
