Apologies for the long post!

I attended my local woodturning club South Downs Woodturners last night. I have been a member for 18 months now and actually turning for nearly 12 months. Absolutely stunned to get 2nd place in the intermediate group competition for natural edge turning.

Each year there is a major club draw and my jaw dropped when I heard my name called out winning the first prize of £200 to be used on anything to do with the hobby. After chatting with John Plater (who won it last year) I have decided on putting it towards a powered respirator - as John says - you only get one set of lungs!

I would like to genuinely thank everyone at the club for welcoming me some 18 months ago and supporting me in my learning journey. It is really rare to find a group of people who take a genuine interest in others and want to share their ideas and experience (willingly) - no matter what level of turner you are.

You can learn a lot from YouTube and have lessons from professionals, but I don't think you can beat being a member of your local club - so no matter where you are in the world, if you have the chance, join your local club.

For anyone in the South East who might be wondering about woodturning - feel free to come along to South Downs Woodturners - who meet on the first Thursday of every month - you will receive the same warm welcome I did!

Legal disclaimer: woodturning can seriously damage your spare leisure time. The hobby is highly addictive and can have an adverse effect on your bank balance. The quality of produced items can go up and down and there is no guarantee of future success. Past performance is no guide to future results.

Well done Steve and you have put your prize to good use. I brought one not so long ago and wondered why I had not invested in it before, I brought the Axminster one as many people who have the trend say it can become uncomfortable when using for a long turning session. Very pleased with mine and comfy to wear the battery last about two days good turning for me before I recharge which in some cases is over the 8 hours they say it will last per charge.
I won the turning of the year last year at our club but only got a trophy I was still very pleased all the same as it is the taking part that counts winning is a bonus

Well done it is a lovely piece. On the respirator front I have heard good things about the Axminster. I have a Trend and yes it is quite heavy but one does get used to it.

Nice to see steve mate. The choice of a powered respirator is a good one. I've got the trend air shield and while it can be a bit cumbersome it does an excellent job

Well done Steve. I've only been turning for 12 months and recently got the Axminister helmet, which may have saved my bacon when a big lump of wood came off the lathe and tried to club me to death. I'm really glad I got it. Congratulations on your success.

Thanks Derek! I will be getting the Axminster one as well. Any recognition for turning is reward in itself!
