Well the Woodturning club I go to, for 2018 is asking those that attend to make something each month so that members can critique them.

Jan is~ Lidded Box with Finial...

So not made one before (apart from the one in the scrap bin from yesterday) :sob:

But this is today’s and the one I will take to the club ...

If Bill comes on the forum he is getting a sneak preview...

Guess it won’t be as elaborate as some but it’s all mine...

Kevin

I won’t be at the club till February Kevin. We all started the same way with finials & as you make more you develop a have yu like then refine it to get a nice balance whether it be a long or short finial. As a new starter yu are doing well & the club challenges will extend your experience & expertise & make you a better turner. If possible do all the challenges & go outside your comfort zone occasionally & it will hepl you on your journey. If you’re not sure how to approach a project just ask for advice. You might still do a good job in spite of my help.:whistling:

The toffy name for the top of the box is finial. A guy called Richard Raffan created or promoted a pointed, delicate style based on pottery designs using art terms.

When I look at your handle or finial I see a good reason to use this shape because to me the whole box is different. Loved the verticals, the use of wild spalted timber. The strong thickness will promote use and strength. It will grace your table forever.

Nice box Kevin, like the shape. Would prefer the final to have a pointy bit on the top, but that's just my opinion.:thumbs:

Very good start Kevin. My favorite trick is to troll the internet and print copies of things I like. I have a large cork board covered with pics. I call this my idea board. Next I just start turning finials. Keep the ones you like and toss the crap.

Terry we both here have respect and ideas one time I had 150 kilos of magazine pages of photography, Wilma has thousands from her magazines in craft. She buys pattern after pattern mags to keep variety and satisfaction, she knits new born layettes etc for our main hospital and others for new born dead babies when the parents are unprepared and ever so grateful at this time. Huge bag fulls of care Bears for Red Cross trauma situations. With my computer I lay off magazines these days. With pens let each one develop by itself.
In my Wood Guild the core members strive for Art appreciation I love to see freelance thoughts such as the design of Kevins Salt Bowl.

A good starting point in box making. I would prefer to see the walls a little thinner. Finials are not the easiest things to get right
