Just a couple of my tool restorations.

Both these screwdrivers were given to me by Neil Lawton that well known retriever of tools in need of attention.

The smaller ratchet screwdriver is a Moore and Wright and was only ratcheting in one direction, the plating on the ferrule was nearly worn away, the handle was cracked and the blade rusted and in need of a regrind. I dismantled, cleaned and lubricated the mechanism, polished away the remaining plating from the ferrule leaving the brass, re-ground and cleaned up the shaft and filled the cracks, primed and gave the handle a coat of black acrylic lacquer.

The larger one from Marples had had its handle coated with some nasty treacly varnish over the top of dirt and marks but the shaft only required a few seconds on a 3m abrasive wheel to clean off the light surface rust. I stripped and re-finished the handle with satin acrylic lacquer and a coat of wax.

Great job Walter I have a pot of spares from ratchet screwdrivers I believe they are stanly ones which just sits here gathering dust keep thinking of shoveing them in the bin I also have some yankee screwdriver bits somewhere. I must stop hoarding, if the wife sees this she will be cheering if she thinks I will start to have a clear out

That's a nice job that you've done with those.
Like others here I too have a collection of tools needing a few minutes TLC to get them looking tip-top again - when I have a few minutes, perhaps!

Fun to play with tools in need of TLC. These days my wrist strength tells me to use power tools to the max. Thanks for sharing Walter.

Peter.

RET: From dictionary.com

Has to be some relevance in there somewhere Neil, it says woody tissue. :winking:

I think what Walter was saying that Neil reminds him of a long haired golden(as in golden years) retriever:winking:

I'm pretty certain My Dad had a set of Moore & Writes. When I was a lad, that's what I thought that all screwdrivers were like.

Its great to see old tools given a new lease of life. I treasure mine. If one thinks about it, the tool makers in Sheffield made so many good tools there is probably no need for anyone here in the UK ever to buy a far eastern import if we all kept our eyes open and learned to restore and care for them properly.
