I have posted a couple of pens over the past two weeks that included Celtic knots in one form or another - both are slated for presentation of Modern Celtic Art that opens next week. In this very rural area in Upstate New York, there is a pocket of full and part-time working artists who work in a Celtic style...there are really far more of us than there should be per capita. This is due, in part to a large number of folks who are either of Irish or Scottish heritage, and also because an Art teacher here many years ago (William "Scotty" MacCrea) happened to work in this style, and he was a "kid magnet" for those of us who were interested from an early age. Jump ahead forty years.

Attached are some pieces of my own that will be included in this exhibit with the pens I have shown.
...The cross is approximately 20" tall in cherry (30th wedding anniversary gift to my own wife)
...The copper repousse ("Seandaidh Mìchael” 'Aged Michael') is about 11" x 14"
...Pewter kilt belt buckle - this was cast in carved plaster many years ago when I "needed but could not afford."
...The pen and ink ("Celtic Calendar") is 22" square - this is the original from which prints were done

Best part of this...I m on my way right now to go visit with Scotty MacCrea and to pick up some of his work for the show. I am thrilled to say that he celebrated his eighty-six birthday a few weeks ago and is still working...and he is still "my teacher," and dearest friend. We are all very excited about this show!

Oh, thanks, Peter. He's truly not "that guy," a "guru." (He would be embarrassed to so noted.) I spent the afternoon with him today, such a fine man. He just kept pulling amazing works of art out of closets from former students, no cast on himself, and saying, "We should include this piece," and clearly didn't realize that he was the catalyst for more than a half-century of very traditional Celtic art on the "wrong side of an ocean." We have cultural treasure of yours here in "the colonies," and we are hanging on with white knuckles. Former Chief of the Kintail MacCreas (from America, as many are now, and only "former" because his oldest son, Rory, wears the crest ), and one of six Celtic Co-Arbs extant world wide.

And he just wanted to make sure that his students were well represented.

I am proud that he was my teacher, and I am proud to have been a teacher because of him.

Art of his forthcoming, Peter. You all deserve to see.
