Following the Tempest marathon, I got fed up with pens for a while so I went back to the jewellery box making and with so much time on my hands I got a bit carried away. Just need to round over the edges and sand and finish these 2

So while one is gluing then you start to make the next. So there are 4 boxes here in various stages of preparation on the band saw in Brazilian rosewood, azobe, Pine, Padauk and oak. Enough work for a couple of weeks now but still lock down since the beginning of March and now they are talking about mid May.... deep joy.:rolling:

The trouble is that then you get lots of off cuts. Now I find I dont have time to sort them out and to move them out!!

Finally I see that Frederick's ladders rungs are catching , no matter how I turn the photos on the files, the forum system turns them back to the original camera angle!! Could you please turn them the right way up Phil.

They will look splendid Pierre. I couldn't help notice the contradiction first you say you've got time on your hands and then you say you haven't got time. Lol.

Looks like you are having fun Pierre and they are coming along nicely, seeing the bandsawn box reminds me that I found two which are cut out but need sanding and glueing together.

That's because I am a very impatient person but equally as Peter referred to a couple of weeks ago the 50 pen contract gave me enough money to but some more specialised wood ie a 18 kilo block of Brazilian Rosewood (I bought it earlier but I had to repay the housekeeping :goesred:) I'm just in the process of buying 20 kilos of Prickly Juniper for some turning projects. AND lastly but equally important I still have 14 acres and an old farmhouse to maintain. So yes time is still tight. :love_it:

Pierre you have a narrow kerf on your bandsaw box. What width of a blade did you use?
Alan

Its a Tuffsaw blade but in fact its 2 blades, one skip tooth for the flat planes

1/2" - SuperTuff Premium 2281mm - 2735mm
- Blade Length: 2616mm
- TPI: 3/4 Vari-Tooth

the one that does the tight curves is :

3/16" - SuperTuff Carbon 2281mm - 2735mm
- Blade Length: 2616mm
- TPI: 6
- Bandsaw Model No. (optional): AXMINSTER HOBBY SERI..

Those were cut and pastes from the invoice, however, I do rely on Ian's advice as to how his blades cut so I normally ring him first and he always has time for advice although recently he has been inundated so his time is precious. I also buy in two's, they are cheap enough and I find that I get comfortable with one, get too lazy to change it over, misuse the one on the machine and before you know it the favorite is blunt again!! :sob:

But I have now given up on skip tooth on narrow blades and I will now only a constant tooth for the tight curved ones, I have found that skip tooth and tight curves may cut fast but they don't 'shimmy' nicely round the bends, also I have found that slowing the band saw speed down to the slowest gives a much nicer 'shimmy' and by shimmy I mean the ability to follow a constant or parabolic curve going off the direction that I want as opposed to the direction that the blade would like. Also I am now going to buy the maximum depth blade for re-sawing that my machine can take because even with a decent normal re-saw blade and maximum tension they still want to bend in the middle at max height for my machine .

Hope that helps

Had a swift turn earlier its amazing what a bit of finishing can do to a piece the bit below (unfinished) is part of the same branch of acacia. Yet more Frederick's ladder hopefully one of the moderators will get round to turning them please.

Then more boxes including a key cabinet for a mate and another in carcasse. The little one in rosewood will be cut in half to make 2.

Well progress is slow that's because I have the time, I had a lot of gardening to do, I was waiting for my router bit and I just fancied taking my time so here is progress so far:

IMG_4500.jpg

For the benefit of those who ask questions via email the masking tape is to protect the main wood from the Japanese saw that will cut off the excess wood on the keys. Following that :

IMG_4503.jpg

I now have to choose the banding that will go on the top edge of the second box, the first box is having its banding glued on hence all of the clips, you can see the last section waiting for space to be glued and blended. The smallest box will have an asymmetric lid like this one below. In the meantime I have to make some thin stock for the internal trays for all and cut out some baize liners and the router bit has arrived so I shall set up for the hinges.

Have a fun lock down all and stay safe
