I have gone back to making boxes for a while and was making this one when a friend came into the workshop for some help on making skirting boards.... Well I hadn't even finished it and he bought it!!

Walnut panché lid, merisier carcase (wild bird cherry) and merisier dividers; sanded to 600 grit on sanding sealer and buffed on white diamond no other finish.

Very nice indeed. Have you made the lids captive so they don't come out

Hi Derek,

No, they are on posts which are glued to the lid but free in the box (down 2/3 of its depth) its a straight post because pivoting hinges tend to droop, these can hinge fully open. They are a fairly tight fit and I use beeswax to minimise friction wear. I have made about 10 of these so far and feedback suggests that in general they are used on high days and holidays so I don't anticipate much wear. I mainly make them for the fun in making the lids which are always a glue up of various woods, this was the first one I ever made .

and as far as I know its sitting in Turkey somewhere.

PS this is a Tung oil finish

Viva the difference Pierre your boxes are worthy, well presented. Small boxes hold a special place in every home I treasure the various ones I have been given, made and bought, very sentimental and precious from tiny to huge they promise mystery especially when made from timber. George opened up the magic of plastic on this forum as well so we are fortunate indeed.

Peter.
