Thanks. I'm familiar using the steel wool/vinegar (on my Oak cabinet tops and mantle) and adding alternating coats of tannin solution makes it even blacker. The tannin solution made from the powder used in home made winemaking for an aged in Oak taste also makes wood like Maple, Cherry, Alder and I expect beech turn black with the steel wool/vinegar too. Very strong black tea is also supposed to have enough tannins for the process. I used the wine tannin because I don't drink tea so don't have any. ;) Using the spray paint or black shoe polish is easier and not anywhere near as messy though.
