Hi Alasdair, it looks if you have an offset mandrel, one side looks thicker than the other. I also noticed tear out on your pen ends, could be because you are not turning down close to the bushings? or tools not sharp enough.
Nevertheless, birds eye maple is a love easy wood to turn mate. Well done.

I will check the mandrel but I think it is possibly that the tubes are not perfectly centred in the blank…
