I have a lot of slimline kits bought in bulk to practice, they are lovely but I think I would prefer a thicker central metal band for better proportions, (more like the ‘slimlines’ sold by Axminster… is there anywhere I could buy thicker rings and an appropriate bush to go with them - I could buy the axminster bushes, but I don‘t think they will sell the rings separately… (ideally in chrome & gold)

Yes... You could buy 'Streamline' center bands, I have bought them before from ebay or Penkitz and Bitz.
Alternatively you could make your own or turn without

ahh that is the missing piece of the puzzle - wasn't aware of streamline kits - are they basically slimline with a thicker centre band?

I rarely turn slimline pens now - stick primarily to Streamline if that kind of pen is required as I too prefer the thicker central band
