Hi I was ask by Dan from Taylors Mirfield @ L D Smith if I would test a new sanding medium that he is thinking of stocking an Abranet Alternative which he will soon be telling everyone about as soon as he is ready and has it in stock
So far I have turned & sanded a bowl and two pens one acrylic the other wood with excellent results and there is still plenty of life in them the 80 grit seemed to wear quicker on the bowl but to be honest who uses 80 g on pens I have used abranet for quite a while but I will be buying this stuff from Dan in future it comes in the following grits 80,120,180,240,320,400 and 600 being a net there is no clogging the dust just goes right through I will include a photo of it after I finished using it the 600 gr is top left down to 80 gr bottom right

Interesting post Woody. Always good to hear of something new and if you are finding it good, I'm sure Dan will sell lots

That does sound good Wood, Dan is certainly ringing the right bells. Hopefully the price is right and he makes a killing at it.

I have never tried that netting stuff dad, It never appealed to me cos it just don't look hard wearing enuff.
Is it plastic? Does it melt under a bit of grunt?
I still have a stack of scratch from my old firm so have to use all that first too.
I will try it under your endorsement when I run out init?

Its like a synthetic fiber/webbing but coated with zig zags of crystals/grit

Hi Bob I only use Abranet on pens since it first come out and comparing this new one I have to say for performance I honestly couldn't see any difference between the two as for life span I cant say just yet as I haven't had the time to test it for that but looking at it after 1 bowl and two pens there is still a lot of life left in it the reason I tested it on a bowl was that would give it more of a vigorous test than pens I will complete the test after our holls and do an update

Just been to my usual supplier to look at the price to buy in the same quantities Dan is selling there will be a saving but in the quantities I would buy in I can get Abranet cheaper but have to buy single grits box of 50 which is how I buy mine Full Box 50 Mirka Abranet 70mm x 125mm and buying the 1 Mt rolls works out about the same price Mtr Roll Abranet so that is something you would have to compare for yourself when Dan lets you know his price

Thanks Woody, interesting.

I buy abranet only as 150mm disks as I use them on my ros when fitting mistral and corian worktops. I only have 240g and a very few in 400 and 600 left at the minute but use it on acrylic pens. I also use the leftover worn out disks - nothing wasted eh?
I buy in boxes of 50 as well and find the cheapest sources are usually the vehicle detailers and refinishers on ebay.
I'd definitely consider Dans if the prices are right.
