Hi, Guys,

Anyone have a recommendation re buying a lathe chisel plus carbide tips suitable for pen-making? I've had a punt around on the Internet and there are plenty for sale - but only if I remortgage the house! Bloody ridiculous prices!!!

I have been a long-time user of the one Woody made for me (and us) a few years back. Sadly, the tiny grub screw has given up the ghost, and I've no idea how to size it in order to buy another.

Have you asked woody? It's probably M3.5 or M4. The M4 is easy to get hold of the M3.5 is much more difficult.

I have just looked for M3.5 and they are readily available which they were not when I was looking for them.

William, thank you for that link, I'll take a look at his shop.

Peter, Yes, I contacted Woody a while back when the grub screw started showing signs of wear, and I believe he was unsure, seeing as how long ago he'd last made any. Where would I get those sizes you've mentioned? I've taken the chisel to several local tool shops and suppliers, and they don't do them.

I believe I have a set of the ones that both Dave and William are recommending, bought second hand on here from Ian when he unfortunately had to sell up. I say believe as they look identical. From my little beginner experience they appear solid well made tools.

Did as you suggested, but none of those seem to have a head on them (so would not secure the tip to the chisel). Have I given what I'm looking for its right name, ie, grub screw?

When you buy your cutters and also with the cutter you have measure that hole as a starting point. Is the existing thread stuffed? Lots of details missing so far. If in doubt altogether go to the workshops of your local University and seek help.

You can find a set of 4 here you may find them on eBay as well.

I have just looked and I have some M3 and M3.5 and M4 If you PM me your address I will send you one of each and you can see if they fit.
