Hey guys, thought I'd post this on here for comments and see what folks thought...so I am making steps to make my first ever segmented bowl .....(yes I am a crazy one!!!).... any ways, so I gets to a point where I have built my rings and we are all good to go, but as I have used different woods, they haven't all been exactly the same height so the rings need levelling. Tried doing it with an orbital sander and to be honest, it looked more out than when I first started! So my head began to think about how I could level the whole thing (8" or 200 mm diameter) at once, one ring at a time, and this is what I came up with:

Basically a board of mdf which is 200mm square, a coach bolt with the end lopped off it, and then a 13mm nut either side which will hold the sandpaper.

The idea is that I will spin it on the lathe, then hold the ring up against it... any ideas or feedback is very welcome here guys- need to know if I am setting myself up to fai

As it stands right now it needs turning to round to save those nasty corners and I would affix it to a faceplate for strength then use cow gum or shearers glue you can then use commercial disks that will peel off. You can buy stick on velcro and use fluffy backed sandpaper. All in the interests of ease, strength and repeatability.

Peter.

I would be concerened about the stability of the disc the way you have it mounted I would be putting a threaded block of hardwood on the back tapped to fit your spindle thread

Don't do that Miles, as it is at the moment I can see hurt and blood. Take the advice from Peter and Alan.

I made mine by screwing a piece of ply to a faceplate, turned it round to the size of my discs (8") and chamfered off the back edge. I'll add a photo after the next time I'm in the shed.

Cant you just glue the ring to a flat board on the faceplate, and face off the ring with a parting tool (or tool of choice), then turn the ring over, and glue the flat side (now your datum) to the faceplate board, and face off again?
:thinks:
