I picked up a couple of fans from a decommissioned piece of equipment at work, when I got home I saw they were 24v not 12v.:vangry:

Couple of weeks later I rescued this.

The plan for the fans are to cut a hole in the back of both my mill and lathe where the circuit boards are and use the fans to cool the circuit boards.

My shed get to 60°C plus in summer.
Would that thaw you poms out?:tongue:

Hi Mark,
Are you still going to use the 24v DC fans ? If yes
Advice if you would like it:-

1- Connect the fans - Positive to positive & negative to negative, this basically means that the fan motors are in parallel - meaning you need 24volts DC to run both - if you can solder connections on
2- Connect two ut / car 12v batteries in series - ie - Positive terminal of one of the fans to positive on 1st battery, negative on 1st battery to positive on 2nd battery, the negative 2nd battery to negative on one of the fans
as the fan Positives & negatives are connected it doesn't matter which fan connection you use as long as they are connect as above.
3- I would suggest that you have spare battery on charge or disconnect each one & charge one overnight 1st night then 2nd next night and so on, you will need to disconnect each battery when charging (without special equipment)
4- Or source two truck battery's usually 24 v DC and use one of those & keep other fully charged, you will need a 24v dc charger though.

Hope that may help, if you have any questions please ask & i'll do my best to help.

Good Luck
Bob

How dusty does it get in the shop as the fans will draw in that all over the circuit boards

I live in the middle of a desert, in a dusty town, I do a bit of work with wood, yer there is a bit of dust. :lmao::lmao:

I was actually going to mount them other way round, so they draw the heat away from the circuit boards and blow it into the shed. Very unlikely but I was thinking that if a bit of swarf got there it would be blown away not suck in onto the circuit board.:thinks:

I would just install Aircon. That would keep me cool as well.

I have a Swampy Aircon but it will only knock about 10°C off the temp and there is too many things in the way to reach the metal work area.:sob: Next shed will be a ducted aircon.

The bloody dogs, if the door is shut they want to come in, If they are in they are desperate to go out.

Thanks Bob, that is very helpful, the type of info I need to understand.:thumbs:
Unfortunately I have no room for batteries in my shed, also heat kills batteries up here, we are lucky to get 2 years out of a battery here.

Looking through a Jaycar cattledog I saw these would one of these do?

25W 9 - 24VDC Switchmode Plugpack | Jaycar Electronics

or one of these?

Hi Mark,
Sent a reply to above post via email, in case you didn't receive it - copied below.

Hi Mark,

Understand problem with batteries. Alternative's :

1- Buy a 240volt / 12volt transformer - problem there is you will also need to convert from 12v AC to 12v DC ( you will need tech knowledge etc )

2- Buy something similar to EBay link below, which gives you 240V Ac to 12v DC via built in transformer & convertor - not that expensive & looks to be fairly easy to connect, to the fans will be from info on Aus Ebay. Having said that I don't understand the connections for 12v output shown on the Ebay listing - one of the photo's they show. So I would ask them to confirm connection's

Suggest that if you go down this route - I suggest that you still wire ( solder ) the fans as mentioned on previously reply.
