I use a NEJE laser for my pens, I have designed a simple jig to attach to the chassis of the laser which works just fine. The NEJE software is a bit clunky but does the job, I usually turn the wooden pen barrel, sand it and seal it with one coat of thin CA before lasering the design on, then I finish it off with a few more coats of CA and sanding to obtain a good finish. In general the laser does the job very well, it takes a while but I just set it going and leave it do its thing.
