I found I couldn’t get the angle I wanted on one of my gouges the other day as it’s somewhat shorter than when I bought it. I could adjust the angle of the gouge holder but I like the simplicity of just setting the tool extension and placing the holder in the Boss. The middle one is the standard Sorby Boss and the one on the right is a later version Sorby bought out that someone kindly gave me. On the left is the new short one I made and it works fine. I did think of just drilling another hole in the big one but I had the alloy in stock anyway and it didn’t take long to drill and turn to size.

If the idea appeals you don’t of course need to make one from alloy, it’s just as easily turned and drilled from a piece of Hardwood. The tool won’t mind!

The diameter of the Sorby one I measured was 34.5mm but made mine about 36mm. The diameter is unimportant as far as I can tell, it just needs to be large enough to support the two holes. Not sure why Sorby decided on making them different sizes but one hole needs to be just over 12mm and the other just over 12.7mm or 1/2”. The length of the piece and the distance between the two holes can be anything you like, I think it’s 6 or 7mm on mine.
