Easy Jimbo, its got to be a 1216Vs from Ax. Great speed, low vibration, and a really powerful motor for the size if you want to turn anything bigger.

How small is small??

I have the Axminster 1218Vs. Although it's my first and one and only lathe I think I made a good choice as it performs well and does the job for me; all for under £240.00 It also now comes with a 3 year guarantee.

I was finding a lot of chatter when turning with the Record even with the new tungsten tip tool so i feel it is not up to it or past it's best.

Jimbo there is nothing on the old record lathes that cant be fixed the DML range you can still get the bearings and they are easy to change the CL 1 and 2 the same the CL 3 and 4 very often the bearings just need to be tightened up and oiled every time it is used if bearings are your problem they are a lot cheaper to sort than buying a new lathe

It is a DML and I think it is the CL3 I am not at home to check, it could well be the bearings I have not checked them in fact I don't know how to.
It is only a chatter problem when using a skew or as I said the tungsten tip tooling especially when roughing also.
