I've got an insurance policy maturing this summer so am thinking of getting a new lathe. The one thats standing out at the moment is the jet 1442. Anybody used one of these?
Can't comment on the jet, never tried one, but I'd certainly shop around it appears that the Chinese manufacturer is open to supply these machines to other suppliers so you might be able to get the same machine under a different brand.

Theres one on ebay Ed Woodturning Lathe: Nova DVR 3000 | eBay
Three years ago before I retired I would have had a new one, Woody ...but now I have to watch the pennies Cake Lady's instructions.....
I too have the axminster 1628, and for how much I have used it I believe it's going to do me very proud and do more than what I need it to do.
One thing for certain I believe you will need a variable speed unit, don't even go for fixed speed belt change units if you can afford it.
Again, I have an adaptor for my chucks, but I brought a new one as mine had seen better days, still have it. You just don't throw those things away do you?
