I've got an insurance policy maturing this summer so am thinking of getting a new lathe. The one thats standing out at the moment is the jet 1442. Anybody used one of these?

Can't comment on the jet, never tried one, but I'd certainly shop around it appears that the Chinese manufacturer is open to supply these machines to other suppliers so you might be able to get the same machine under a different brand.

China Wood Lathe (MC1847VF), Deluxe Spindler Moulder With Sliding Table (WS1000TA) - Burt Group Co., Ltd..

Good advice, no point paying more than you need to, but check the spec. carefully to make sure you are getting exactly the same machine and not a clone with a lower spec.

Hi Keith I know Terry has the Axminster Trade Series AT1628VS Woodturning Lathe Axminster Trade Series AT1628VS Woodturning Lathe - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning - Crafts & Hobbies | Axminster.co.uk and is well pleased with it and for the extra 200 quid it has a better V/S the 1442 has a pulley clutch speed system which isn't a true V/S it is an 8 speed lathe and this design dose produce problems but the other one has an inverter much better and is a true V/S this one would be my choice out of the two OK it is a bit shorter and the stand isn't included in the price but it is a much better quality lathe if you want longer that could be added at a latter date hope this helps mate and hasn't confused the issue good luck with your choice

I am extremely pleased with my Axminster 1628 lathe but if you could stretch your policy can stretch to approv £2000 then I would look at the Killinger 1400 SE which is an excellent lathe and it is made in GERMANY !!!!!!

Thanks for the replies gents. I'd be wary of importing a lathe myself from China, what with warranty and things going wrong etc. The reason I was looking at the jet is it is 1in 8tpi same as my axminster 900 and I have the k80 and 100 chucks for it. If I had to buy 2 more chucks and accessories that would put another approx £400 on the costs.

I too have the axminster 1628, and for how much I have used it I believe it's going to do me very proud and do more than what I need it to do.

One thing for certain I believe you will need a variable speed unit, don't even go for fixed speed belt change units if you can afford it.

Again, I have an adaptor for my chucks, but I brought a new one as mine had seen better days, still have it. You just don't throw those things away do you?

I agree that variable speed is an important consideration, but do make sure it is by means of an inverter like the Axminster 1628. Some cheaper types of electronic speed control can result in poor performance. I have come across one lathe with "electronic speed control" that I could stop with a moderate cut on a medium sized bowl. My advice would be to try the lathe out before buying if possible and don't trade quality for features that are desirable but not essential.
